Can I use a notebook trackpad like you would a pill?

I have an Acer laptop with Windows Vista and I wonder if can use the trackpad as if it were a tablet. I do not really want to buy a USB tablet like a bamboo, so I'm looking for alternatives. Would use of the OneNote note-taking during my courses in science and mathematics for the development of tables and graphs would be needed. Thank you for your help!
