What is the difference between an "iPad" and a "tablet PC?

I called to check on a store shelf and a computer I said all they have is iPads. I wanted a tablet computer as a gift. Can someone please tell me the difference? Thank you. I've never had an iPad is, so you need to know what each element can and will do and are easy to use?
