What kind of medication for heartburn are taken?

I have heartburn so bad (usually at least 3 to 4 times a day and every night when I go to bed). At the counter medicines such as Gaviscon, etc. just does not quite cut it! I went to the doctor and was prescribed tablets Somac (pantoprazole). These great job but the cost ($ 30 more for a packet of 30 tablets). Anyone with drugs been prescribed for heartburn doctor found it worked well, but not too deal? Thank you!
