Pocket PC can result in an operating environment based on Microsoft Windows CE system performance (a variation of the operating system Microsoft Windows for miniature computers and embedded systems) or a portable device that works with a specific version of that operating system. According to Microsoft, the Pocket PC is "a handheld device that allows users to store and retrieve e-mails, contacts, calendar, multimedia files, games, exchange text messages with MSN Messenger, browse the Web and more. "
To be labeled as a Pocket PC, there are certain conditions prior to handheld devices, such as Microsoft Windows CE, Pocket PC Edition, includes a specific set of applications in ROM, including a touch screen, directional pad, and a set of hardware application buttons, and is based in a version 4 compatible CPU ARM, Intel XScale CPU, MIPS CPU or SH3 CPU.
